Yeah, I know the irony

Description

Well, it’s finally gone that far, I’ve actually had to go and make a stamp on it, how ironic. It’s just that I’ve had this argument with so many stubborn (but well meaning) individuals and have gotten quite tired of spelling it out for them. So for now on I’ll just send them here.

Before I start I’d like to note that I refer to Deviantart Stamps only and not real-world stamps because there actually is a major difference between the two that I’ll explain in a moment.

So here I go. DA stamps aren't an art form, they are a semi-artistic tool created by the DA founders to help keep debates and disputes off of the REAL art among other purposes such as spreading ones like/dislike for a certain character, situation, subject, etc or posting them on your profile to let people know what you’re like. DA stamps are not to be compared to real stamps for real stamps actually require hard labour and artistic talent to create rather than simple animations and typography used with the PS timeline option. Not to mention that real-world stamps tend to have a cultural or national representation or icon.
Furthermore, the argument "if it’s on deviantart it is art" is invalid because there are many forms of media on here that are in fact, not art such as: memes, webcam photos, recolors, etc. So though stamps do hold many good purposes, they are not art; and lately, it’s just plain stupid on how they are being treated. If anything, they are nothing more than colourful journal entries used to absorb more attention.

Based on my history with stamps, I have seen many purposes for DA Stamps as listed below, but out of the bunch, only one really invokes the true definition of art:
-Religion
-Fandoms
-Fetishes
-Abortion
-Suicide
-Racism
-Music
-Sexuality
-Sexual Orientation
-Gun Laws
-Nationality
-Art support
-DA support
-Character Support
-Movie support
-Novel Support
-Game support
-Hate or distaste for a give subject or person
-Quotes On life (this is the only one which holds artistic value)

Basically anything somebody would post in a journal am I right?

Stamp Construction:
Another good point relating to the separation between DA stamps and true art is in the creation.
Take my stamp for example, it looks decent enough, but it literally only took 3.5 minutes to make. That’s less time than what it took to write this all out, honestly; If there hasn’t been very much effort put into something, then it isn’t really art now is it? It’s like a painting, you spend weeks creating a painting that ends up at a professional level and it is art. But if you go into painter on your computer, draw a few lines that are unrecognizable to the eye, and pass it off as a character; that obviously isn’t art. And yes, I know time or quality isn't the objective of art, its the emotion. But if you consider it, stamps seem to lack the emotion which art posesses. Sure there's anger, but only blunt anger that is rarely justified.

Stamp Attention:
This is where the most abuse of DA stamps comes in. If you haven’t noticed already, the majority of DA stamps are nothing more but blunt opinions smothered with colour. When an opinionated statement comes to mind, rather than writing a journal about it, deviants will create a stamp, WHY? Because they attract more attention. Think of stamps as a form of forum; a user creates a stamp expressing their view and people will either agree or disagree. On top of that they’ll begin fighting with each other, thus increasing its popularity even further. Not to mention that a large amount of deviants actually go in search of stamps in their spare time, just to get into debates. I bet you anything that by the end of the month, this stamp will receive more views than half of my deviations.

Stamp location:
And if my points have yet to hold any meaning to you, think of this. Have you seen DA stamps anywhere else but on DA? Because though they are called stamps, do you really think that the post office would allow you to attach one to an envelope, or do you think that they would send the letter right back?

Seriously though, saying DA stamps are an art form is like saying children are allowed to vote. Because though adults and children may look similar, there is a BIG difference. Just think of DA stamps of the children of the art world, they hold artistic qualities, without actually being an artform.

Quote from DA itself on what stamps are: "Small graphics with a stamp-like border used to convey a message."

An artform? I think not.

Well, that pretty much sums up my view, lets hear yours. I'm sure you've got plenty of whitty comebacks and counter remarks to bring up.

TLDR?
Get a damn life, if you’re gonna come on a stamp to argue, you better be damn well ready to read a shitload of info that your opposition has to dish out. Honestly though, any comment placed with less than 10 words mocking me or this stamp will be removed.

TLDR?
PA-FUCKING-THETIC

Oh, and one last thing, no: "y u so mean" comments please,
we're all adults/young adults here, so stop acting like a child and grow up please.

Eh. I say they are or can be art. I have seen stamps that have lacked what I would call art, but I have seen some stamps even opinionated ones that took some skill.

Besides since art is subjective it may not be an artform to you, but it can be to me.
